After the scene
Call the phone number on your proof-of-insurance card to file a claim as soon as you can, and ask which forms or documents you'll need. Have the report number and everything you collected at the scene in front of you. Ask whether you can use your own repair shop. Read your policy, since it sets out which losses it covers.
Keep notes of each conversation with your agent or the adjuster, with the date and the name of the person you spoke to. Keep every letter, email and form about the claim in one file.
